MAC cosmetics, the initials stand for Make-up Art Cosmetics, are probably the most famous and widely used cosmetics in the world. They were founded by Frank Toskan a make-up artist and Frank Angelo the owner of a hair salon chain. They were both involved in fashion photography and were looking for cosmetics products to meet their needs. They couldn’t and so started their own line. The rest as they say is history. That was in 1984 and today every one who has an interest in make-up wants to be a trained MAC Cosmetics Artist. And MAC offers advanced classes for professional artists. However they have nothing for the aspiring artist who is just starting out. This article is for the aspiring artist. It will tell you what to do. Your Book

You need a team. The team is made up of a photographer, a stylist, and a videographer. When you are just starting out you can approach students at local fashion and art schools. They also need to build their portfolios. Try placing free ads on Craig’s List. Why not go to hair salons and offer to work with their clients for free as long as you can take pictures. And offer them copies of the pictures. Let florists know that you will work with brides at a discount if the bride and her bridesmaids will let you take pictures and video. The video is a requirement for MAC and they want the edited version to be one with you talking about what you are doing. The photos will be your book, the video will be your reel, and the list of your experience will be your resume.

Okay here’s a starter list to get you going” Give out flyers at local malls Work with bridal shops Work with bands making them up for their publicity stills. Tour with bands to get experience with stage work Work with local theater groups Contact modeling agencies Contact department stores, boutiques and offer to do makeup for fashion shows or special events they might be putting on. Contact high school and college drama departments.

Your people

You must document your experience as much as possible. This means you want your team to be with you as much as possible. Don’t forget the narration, for the video, of why you are using the makeup in a particular way.

The Book

A portfolio is a book of photos showing your work. The photos are 9 x 12 and/or 11 x 14. And that’s your book
