Readying Yourself For The Bridegroom Speech
![]()
Although it has been a wedding tradition for many many years, bridegrooms still haven’t gotten used to the idea of delivering a bridegroom speech in front of everyone on their wedding day. No matter how much you repulse the idea, there simply is no good reason not to do your best and stand in front of everyone for your speech.
Try following the tips here to help get rid you of intimidation and stage fright.
Plan…plan…and plan some more – Planning ahead of time is a timesaving strategy that can help you a great deal in writing down your speech. The ideal thing to do is to list all the people you want to thank, anecdotes you would like to share and jokes that you think would get your guests some good laugh. Write the draft ahead of time and as the wedding day approaches, make some necessary changes. This way, you’ll have half the problem solved as you shift your attention to other things.
Although you may feel confident to make your speech impromptu, nothing still beats a well-prepared speech, so make it a point that you at least have made some preparations before the wedding day comes up.
Use some prompt cards – You won’t lose your face if you will use some prompt cards so don’t be afraid to prepare some. Prompt cards are made to help remind you the key points of your speech. These still work well even if you already know your speech by heart.
Edit your speech and practice how exactly you will deliver it – Once you’re done with your first draft, print it out, proofread it and practice how you will deliver it. The best way to correct any speech is to put it on first paper, this allows you to see the errors on the speech easier. While editing your speech, remove and replace unnecessary sections, words or expressions, this helps in polishing the content of the speech.
After editing your speech, practice how you would deliver your speech. Ask a friend to act as an observer and later, ask him for his evaluation. Ask them for their comments and be sure to take note of their observations. If you have no available friend, however, you can practice in front of the mirror. Watch yourself deliver the speech – observe how your body moves, your facial expressions, your phrasing, your intonation and the general movements that accompany the words you speak. Doing these tricks will not only make you prepare for your upcoming speech but these can also ensure that you’ll have an almost perfect delivery of your work.
Rest yourself – Get some rest the night prior to the big day. Conquer your jitters and sleeplessness in any way possible as these could heighten your nerves before you speak. There are plenty of sleep-inducing tools, including hot showers or drinking relaxing teas. Whichever way you do it, so long as you’re in bed early, it’s good.
Insert a funny joke in your bridegroom speech – Not only would a joke make the crowd get some good laugh, it would also help you to relax. If delivered right, jokes can significantly enhance the effect of your speech on its listeners.
