Getting married? Weddings can be hard work and that’s before you’ve even started planning the honeymoon. Whatever time of year you’re tying the knot here’s our global guide to chasing the honeymoon sun month by month.

January – For an Oz dream head to Australia which is hot, hot, hot – and that’s just the weather! Sydney is awash with colour – a vibrant city with breathtaking beaches. The Caribbean is also a sure bet with good prices to be found and quieter after the Christmas and New Year rush.

February – Gambia, Goa and the Kenyan coast are good winter sun getaways, and February is one of the driest months for a safari.

March – For a truly unique honeymoon head to Nepal which enjoys a pleasant climate this month, with Spring flowers in full bloom. Seville is a mass of orange blossom, and early Spring sunshine makes this an ideal city break destination.

April – Madeira, and Marrakech – all under five hours flying time, are fresh and warm in April. Turkey too has warmer than average Mediterranean temperatures. The Caribbean is still warm and dry but at the end of its official high season with lower prices up for grabs.

May – Long haul best bets include Malaysia, with a comfortable climate and fascinating culture. In America, the east coast including San Francisco and California should be ideal – neither too hot, not too cold, and prices are ‘shoulder season’.

June – Hot tropical destinations at this time of year include Bali. Australia’s Northern Territory and Queensland are also now warm and dry. Northern Europe is warmer now with a chance to catch the midnight sun in the Scandinavian cities.

July – The Mediterranean with its sizzling temperatures seems an obvious choice but it may get too hot for some! Further a field the Canadian Rockies offer spectacular scenery and plentiful sunshine.

August – Not the ideal time for travel in Europe as it is peak season, and prices are at their highest but if you want sun its here in abundance. The most romantic city in the world – Paris, is blissfully quiet during the annual holidays. Elsewhere, the Seychelles are at their driest.

September – Beautiful Mauritius is simply glorious around September and the Mediterranean is cooler and without the crowds.

October – Enjoy the fall in North America’s New England – plenty of sunshine brings out the glorious autumnal landscape. The Far East cities of Hong Kong and Singapore are at their best too with reduced humidity.

November – Try Mexico – the odd shower won’t blight warm temperatures. Thailand is cooler now and certainly has less tropical heat.

December – The Maldives is hot and dry at this time of year. North African destinations such as Tunisia and Morocco also still enjoy the winter sun. As does Dubai.

Honeymoons are more often than not an afterthought to the planning of the wedding itself, when, in terms of memories, they are just as significant as your day in church. Your honeymoon is a time that you’ll remember as long as you live, so give careful consideration to honeymoon ideas and honeymoon locations.

First determine what your objectives are for the trip and what you can and can’t live without. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? What are your priorities? Cost, adventure, sightseeing, weather, etc.

Visits to secluded beach resorts or islands are traditionally popular, for obvious reasons. They allow you to enjoy quality time with each other whilst relaxing from the hectic timetable of the last six months and taking in beautiful surroundings.

Cruises are another option; they give you an equally quiet, relaxing experience whilst also making it possible to visit a host of different locations. Should you have a preference for a more active honeymoon, give consideration to an adventure travel trip or a mountain resort.

Regarding honeymoon locations, these are some of the most popular: Argentina, Bali, Bermuda, Caribbean, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Madagascar, Mauritius, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand.

Whichever kind of location and honeymoon you decide on, look to book it a minimum of six months beforehand so that you’ll get the best choice of rooms, and can start planning in general. Ask if there is a ‘romance’ or ‘honeymoon’ package available; romantic extras such as penthouse rooms, champagne and bouquets of flowers will make your time away more memorable still.

Research and book tours, tickets, restaurant seats, and any other activities for which advance reservations can be needed, especially should you be going on your honeymoon in the summer months (bear in mind that different locations will have different peak seasons).

Do what you can to make your honeymoon different to an ordinary vacation. Along with your standard vacation items, consider taking some fun extras with you, like lingerie, bubble bath, candles and romantic music.
